Celebrating Community While Looking Toward the Future
This feature explores the continued growth of Edmonton's Flying Canoë Volant festival and the opportunities and challenges that accompany its success. As the festival attracts larger crowds each year, organizers are working to balance community engagement, cultural celebration, and long-term sustainability while staying true to the event's roots.
Through interviews and research, I explored the perspectives of organizers, volunteers, local businesses, and attendees to better understand the festival's impact on the community. Rather than simply covering the event itself, I wanted to tell the story of the people behind it and highlight the work that goes into creating an experience that celebrates local culture and brings people together.
As a published feature for Edmonton Edge, this project allowed me to strengthen my interviewing, research, and feature writing skills while adapting my work for a public audience. It challenged me to organize information from multiple sources, ask thoughtful questions, and create a story that was both informative and engaging.

What I Learned
This story pushed me outside my comfort zone as both a writer and interviewer. By speaking with festival organizers, volunteers, and attendees, I gained confidence in conducting interviews and learned the value of community-centred journalism. Covering Flying Canoë Volant reinforced the importance of cultural representation and preserving Edmonton's diverse history, while inspiring me to become more engaged with the local communities I hope to continue telling stories about.
